Family Day/Islander Day/Louis Riel Day/Nova Scotia Heritage Day Retail Hours
Family Day/Islander Day/Louis Riel Day/Nova Scotia Heritage Day are statutory holidays in some provinces. For those provinces that observe the holiday, Family Day will fall on February 18, 2019. Note that beginning in 2019, B.C.’s family day has been harmonized with the other provinces and will also occur on February 18.
Since there are exceptions to Family Day, Islander Day, Louis Riel Day and Nova Scotia Heritage Day retail hours, based on jurisdiction and type of retail store, RCC members are encouraged to check with their local municipality or provincial/territorial government if they have specific questions.
Please note:
In provinces where there are no regulations related to holiday retail hours (see below), there may still be rules in a retailer’s shopping mall lease agreement pertaining to retail opening hours on that day.
Atlantic Canada:
- In Newfoundland & Labrador, Family Day is not a statutory holiday, so holiday hours do not apply.
- In New Brunswick, Family Day is a retail closing day for most retailers.
- In Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Heritage Day is a retail closing day for most retailers.
- In Prince Edward Island, Islander Day is a retail closing day for most retailers.
Quebec:
- In Quebec, Family Day is not a statutory holiday, so holiday hours do not apply.
Ontario:
- In Ontario, Family Day is a retail closing day for most retailers.
Manitoba:
- In Manitoba, retailers are allowed to open on Louis Riel Day between 9 AM to 6 PM as long as they pay their employees according to the law.
British Columbia / Alberta / Saskatchewan:
- In British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, retailers are allowed to open on Family Day as long as they pay their employees according to the law.
Territories:
- In the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon, Family Day is not a statutory holiday, so holiday hours do not apply.
