Retail Sales Up 0.9% MoM in December

Some highlights from last week’s Statistics Canada release on December 2023 retail sales.  

  • December Sales Rise: Retail sales up 0.9% to $67.3B, led by motor vehicle and parts dealers (+1.9%). 
  • Core Retail Growth: Core sales increased 0.5% in December; 2.4% growth in 2023, with food & beverage and health & personal care retailers leading. 
  • E-Commerce Shift: Seasonally adjusted e-commerce sales down 3.6% in December, accounting for 5.5% of total retail. 
  • Canadian Retail 2023 Highlights: Total sales reached $794.4B, up 2.2% from 2022. Major gains in motor vehicles (+7.0%) and a notable decrease in gasoline stations (-9.9%). 
  • Looking Ahead: Early estimate suggests a 0.4% decrease in January 2024 sales.
