RCC has received advance notice that the Government of Canada’s ban on certain high alcohol flavoured beverages deemed appealing to youth will come into effect on Wednesday, May 29 with no grace period. Members may wish to verify stock and contractual arrangements with suppliers to ensure compliance with the ban.
- What’s Affected: Flavoured purified alcoholic beverages that are high in alcohol and sold in large, single-serve containers. Alcohol content in these beverages are now limited to 25.6 mL of alcohol (representing 1.5 standard drinks) when in containers of 1000 mL or less.
- What’s Not Affected: Beer, wine, spirits and spirit-based drinks (vodka-based, etc.), and flavoured purified alcohol in glass containers of 750 ml or more.
- Why: This follows an incident in Quebec in March of last year where these products were implicated in the death of a 14-year old girl.
