StatsCan: Retail sales fell 1.4% in March
May 24, 2023According to the latest report from Statistics Canada, retail sales dropped 1.4% month-over-month to $65.3 billion in March 2023.
Core retail sales increased 0.3% in March, posting its fourth consecutive increase. Building materials and sporting goods led StatsCan’s nine subsectors with 1.6% increases respectively.
The largest decrease in core retail sales (-1.2%) came from clothing, clothing accessories, shoes, jewelry, luggage, and leather goods retailers. Sales were down in two store types, led by lower sales at clothing and clothing accessories retailers (-1.0%).
Nine-of-ten provinces saw sales decrease as only British Columbia (0.9%) saw a boost in sales. More info on retail sales can be found on the RCC Retail Pulse Dashboard.
