Single-use plastic shopping bag ban begins October 30, 2020 in Nova Scotia

October 27, 2020

The government of Nova Scotia has decided to keep October 30, 2020 as the day where single use plastic shopping bags will be banned throughout the province. This comes after advice from Nova Scotia Public Health confirming it is safe to use reusable shopping bags.

Unlike PEI and the Greater Moncton area, there are no specific mandates related to paper bags and charging fees for alternative bags. RCC members will note however, the government’s recommendation for businesses who choose to distribute paper bags, is that they are encouraged to use paper bags containing at least 40% post consumer recycled paper.

The province has also produced posters (in English and French) that retailers may wish to post in their stores.

Details of the single-use plastic bag ban and alternative can be found on here and you can also visit RCC’s shopping bag and single-use plastic regulations across Canada resource.
