FINAL RETALIATORY TARIFFS LIST ANNOUNCED

This afternoon, the Government of Canada released the final list of tariffs on imported U.S. products in response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium.

These tariffs, on the landed price of imported goods of U.S. origin, will apply to importations beginning on July 1, 2018. Note that these tariffs do not apply to goods that are manufactured elsewhere in the World but merely shipped into Canada through the U.S.

A preliminary list was issued on May 31, 2018 and stakeholders were asked to provide comment by June 15, 2018. RCC engaged with members to inform our submission and made a number of specific recommendations. See RCC’s submission here:

The final list of tariffs, released today, is found at the following link: https://www.fin.gc.ca/access/tt-it/cacsap-cmpcaa-1-eng.asp

Based on a quick review of the final list, the only retail-significant exclusions from the original list are prepared mustard, aluminum foil and aluminum kitchen and household products. Given that Canada is a major exporter of mustard seed and aluminum, this is presumably because a tariff on these products could adversely affect Canadian exports.
