Rent relief for retailers to continue: CEWS extended, CERS introduced

November 5, 2020

The government tabled its much-anticipated legislation, Bill C-9, which will extend the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) until June 2021 and which will introduce a new rent relief program, the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) for retailers and other businesses impacted by COVID-19.

RCC is pleased the government will continue to move forward with its plan to extend the wage subsidy until next summer and that the plans to reduce the generosity of the subsidy over the fall have been paused as many businesses across the country continue to deal with the impacts of government restrictions and shutdowns.

Moreover, we are encouraged that the government is pushing ahead with the long-awaited improvements to its rental support policy while also extending the program to cover the period from October 2020 through June 2021. RCC has been actively involved in pushing for changes to the previous CECRA program and a significant number of changes we pushed for have been adopted.

RCC will prepare a more in-depth analysis for members as soon as details become available.

More information on these programs can be found on RCC’s website
