StatsCan reports bump in retail job numbers in December; 2022 totals up from pre-pandemic

January 10, 2023

Canada’s economy added 104,000 jobs in December 2022 according to Statistics Canada’s latest job report.

In retail, this jump equated to a 1.3% increase month-over-month and a 4.0% decrease from December 2021 according to RCC’s Retail Pulse Dashboard, which is free for RCC members to access.

From an annual perspective, seasonally-adjusted figures from StatsCan showed retail jobs increased to 2.2 million positions across the entirety of 2022, up 70,000 from 2021 and higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Despite this slight annual uptick, we know from speaking with our members that talent issues have risen to the forefront for many retailers. Retailers are almost uniformly reporting much higher turnover rates in their stores and a continued shortage of options.
