National employment up slightly in July – StatCan

StatCan released its monthly jobs numbers last week and showed that overall Canadian employment rose by 94,000 (+0.5%) in July, after rising by 235,000 (+1.2%) in June. However, the number of people working in retail trade was little changed in July, and remained -2.7% (-61,000) below pre-COVID levels. July’s gains were largely concentrated in full-time work (+83,000).

August’s jobs numbers are expected to show greater improvements, with RBC already reporting July gains in retail spending (+2%) and dining and lodging (+1.5%).
