PEI releases report following comprehensive review of Employment Standards

November 21, 2023

Prince Edward Island’s Employment Standards Comprehensive Review Panel Report has finally been released. The report is extensive and is a culmination of a two-year, in-depth review. The report includes recommendations related to the province’s Employment Standards Act and the Youth Employment Act. RCC was an active participant in the consultation and RCC’s advocacy is evident in the fact that the panel’s recommendations are generally balanced and harmonized with best practices in Atlantic Canada and across the country.

Although many of the recommended changes would be administrative in nature and involve clarifying responsibilities and updating language to reflect modern society; the panel also provided recommendations related to:

  • defining gig workers;
  • the minimum allowable age for work;
  • paid and unpaid sick leave, and;
  • an updated minimum wage formula.

Government will review the report and determine whether it wishes to implement any of the report’s recommendations. RCC will continue its advocacy with the PEI government as it considers these recommendations.

RCC members can access more information regarding this review on the PEI government’s information page where the final report can also be accessed.
