EU Proposes Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes for textiles

July 11, 2023

On July 5, 2023, the European Commission announced a proposal to introduce mandatory extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes for textiles in all EU member states. As part of this, producers will be responsible for funding the end-of-life management of textile waste including collection, sorting, reuse, and recycling. How much producers will pay will be eco-modulated to help incentivize waste reduction and better product design to promote circularity.

As a next step, the proposed amendment to the Waste Framework Directive will be considered by the European Parliament and the Council. RCC will monitor developments closely as we know the federal and provincial governments often look to the EU as a leader when it comes to circular economy policy.
