EU’s Ambitious Single-Use Packaging Ban Passed

April 30, 2024

Attention all retailers and quick-service restaurants navigating single-use packaging bans: The European Parliament has just greenlit a law targeting specific single-use plastic packaging by 2030, directly impacting retailers and restaurants. The law introduces mandatory reusable packaging quotas for drink distributors (excluding wine) and mandates quick-service eateries to provide reusable container alternatives. By 2029, countries must implement deposit systems ensuring a 90% collection rate for single-use bottles and cans, like mandatory return schemes at retail outlets. However, concerns linger about recycled plastic blending with virgin plastic, potentially fueling deceptive eco-claims. RCC will be closely monitoring the formal approval of the law and will continue to update RCC members on developments.
