RCC Win: B.C. Agrees to Put Health Cost Recovery Act On Hold

April 30, 2024

Attention RCC Members’ legal teams:  RCC’s collaboration with the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade in spearheading influential business association lobbying endeavors has prompted the B.C. Government to hit pause on Bill 12 (Public Health Accountability and Cost Recovery Act). This pivotal move, announced on April 23, 2024, safeguards businesses, for now, from potential health care cost repercussions. The broad legislation would allow the Federal or Provincial governments to sue for the recovery of health care costs related to products, byproducts, and services provided to residents of B.C. In addition, the legislation applied not only to manufacturers but also to those promoting, marketing, or distributing products or services. Government has initiated discussions with social media companies, identified as primary targets under the legislation.
