Calgary council passes single-use bylaw

January 31, 2023

The City of Calgary has passed its single-use bylaw consistent with some other jurisdictions that ban all types of plastic check-stand bags and put a minimum fee on paper and reusable bags.

Effective January 16, 2024, a $0.15 per paper shopping bag and $1.00 per reusable shopping bag must be charged, increasing to $0.25 per paper bag and $2.00 a year later.

Additionally, effective January 16, 2024, foodware accessories (utensils, straws, stir sticks, pre-packaged condiments, napkins, etc.) may only be distributed upon request, although customer prompts and self-service will be permissible. You can find more details on RCC’s bylaw tracking chart.
