Calgary prepares to pass single-use plastics bylaw

October 18, 2022

Calgary City Council has directed administration to prepare a single-use plastics bylaw that is expected to be approved by January 2023 that reflects most elements of the recently enacted Edmonton bylaw. Under the current timelines, the bylaw will come into force in January 2024 and see the elimination of plastic check stand bags, and mandatory fees charged on paper and reusable bags. Additionally, accessories will shift to customer-initiated, or upon request only.

Unlike Edmonton, at this point, there is no discussion of restrictions on takeaway cups.
