Manitoba introduces antiquated liquor amendments

December 5, 2022

The Manitoba government has introduced legislation that would allow existing liquor retailers including beer vendors and wine stores to expand their offerings to all types of liquor but have, however, ignored what polls have showed was strong cross-party support for the convenience of being able to buy liquor in grocery stores and convenience stores.

RCC is disappointed that after extensive advocacy, the Bill wasn’t more progressive, and expressed our view to media and government over the past few days. The NDP Opposition, who in Manitoba has the ability to defer up to five Bills into the Fall 2023 session (that will not happen until post provincial election) may choose to delay passing this Bill piece, consistent with their view against expanded privatization of liquor. This would essentially kill the Bill.
