RCC represents grocery retail in House of Commons Standing Committee on food prices

October 4, 2022

On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, Retail Council of Canada represented the grocery retail industry, speaking to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance about the ongoing causes of food price increases.

It was reiterated to attendees by RCC’s Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Karl Littler, that a varying number of factors are contributing to inflation, especially when it comes to food vendors. Those impacts include the Ukraine war, extreme weather events, soaring fuel prices, and ongoing supply chain disruptions and labour shortages that arose during the pandemic.

“What’s critical, both for industry and government, is to look at the whole picture,
not just the surface – not chase down rabbit holes – and to factor that into any policy approaches and commentary,” said Littler.

Wednesday’s committee appearance follows an op-ed by RCC CEO Diane J. Brisebois published last week in Canadian Grocer that spoke to rising food prices and retail’s role as it continues.
