StatCan job numbers: Retail numbers down 4% from 2021
December 12, 2022Statistics Canada says Canadian employment was little changed (+10,000) in November 2022 as the unemployment rate declined just 0.1% to 5.1%.
However, retail jobs ticked down -4.1% (unadjusted) year-over-year, although they were still up 0.1% from October 2022. This tracks with the recent StatCan Q4 2022 Business Conditions survey, which showed 63% of retailers find recruiting and retaining staff more challenging than 12 months ago.
RCC’s Retail Pulse Dashboard – which gives RCC members up-to-the-minute data on all things retail, including job numbers – shows month-over-month job number increases in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick to total of 2.2 million retail jobs across the country.
