Ontario eviction moratorium passed
June 18, 2020The Ontario government passed the Protecting Small Business Act, which halts or reverses the eviction of commercial tenants and protects tenants from having their assets seized during COVID-19. The legislation applies to businesses that are eligible for federal/provincial rent assistance for evictions from May 1, 2020 until August 31, 2020.
This eviction moratorium applies to all tenants who may apply to the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) for small business program. RCC sees this as a proactive way to encourage landlords to apply for CECRA, which reduces rent for small business tenants.
