Improved affordability and accessibility of medications in PEI

August 22, 2023

In partnership with the federal government, the PEI government has made significant announcements over the summer to help Islanders access the medications they need. Read the press release. In June 2023, the government announced its $5 co-pay prescription program for eligible medications used for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mental health covered under the public drug programs. The government also modified the High-Cost Drug Program to ensure that all income levels could apply to access the program. In July 2023, the PEI government adjusted the Catastrophic Drug Program to lower the annual cap on the amount of money that a household spends on eligible medications. This announcement is also good news for RCC pharmacy members as it should broaden the number of Islanders who can access medications.
