The Retail Conditions Report provides members with valuable, real-time insight into consumer behaviour, best practices in retailing, trends, and economic conditions.

Winter 2022

Canadians play discount chicken with retailers

The combination of being squeezed by economic pressures, the long-predicted shift to experiences versus goods, weird weather, or just waiting out retailers for better offers, Canadian’s value orientation is in full bloom as we head to the finish line

This report was developed from interviews of mid-and large-size retailers from November 28 to December 4, 2022. Our survey was comprised of 7,389 retail doors representing various retail formats and geographies. We looked at the periods of September to November from a high level, taking a deeper dive into October metrics and capturing the Black Friday/Cyber Monday retail event period. The report's results capture sales and other metrics based on information supplied by retail respondents to the survey. We do not present the results as a statistically representative analysis. They are, instead, a retail pulse to help provide context around trends impacting the industry. We do not include respondents from the gas, motor vehicles or grocery sectors within our survey.
