Saskatchewan First Act passes

The Government of Saskatchewan has passed The Saskatchewan First Act which has been framed by the Saskatchewan Party as “defending the province’s economic autonomy and potential from federal overreach.” Similar to Alberta’s Bill, it is designed to assert Saskatchewan’s exclusive legislative jurisdiction in issues related to the exploration and development of natural resources, as well as regulation of all industries and businesses falling within provincial jurisdiction.

The Act indicates that for each of these areas, the province holds jurisdiction over regulation of environmental standards, greenhouse gas, and other emissions. It’s anticipated that the legislation will be challenged in court, and RCC will monitor what implications this Act has on our members.
