Alberta UCP wins reduced majority

Premier Danielle Smith and the governing United Conservative Party have been relected with a majority mandate, holding off a competitive battle from Rachel Notley’s Alberta New Democratic Party who swept Edmonton and performed well in Calgary.

The UCP received strong from rural Alberta and won sufficiently in Calgary, taking 49 of 87 seats across the province and 52% of the vote as of publication. This represents a reduction of 14 seats. Rachel Notley’s NDP attracted 44% percent of the popular vote, capturing 38 seats, and will remain in opposition.

RCC has developed a good working relationship with many within the UCP, and once the Cabinet is formed will request several meetings with critical Ministers to ensure our member priorities continue to be advanced.

Throughout the campaign, RCC engaged with the UCP around retail sector priorities as part of our Vote Retail campaign, and in addition to a commitment to maintaining the province’s competitive tax advantage and a predictable minimum wage, RCC received pledges by the UCP to collaborate on retail crime and safety, as well as work together on strategies to address retail job gaps and growth requirements.
