March 5, 2024

Alberta’s 2024 Budget unveiled by Finance Minister Nate Horner on Thursday February 29, 2024, emphasizes sustainable economic growth, while prioritizing health, education, and safety. The budget maintains Canada’s lowest corporate tax rate at 8% and introduces a new, lower tax bracket for earners below $60,000. Significant investment is directed towards enhancing community safety, including funding for new police officers and crime prevention initiatives. The province’s economic projections are optimistic, with forecasts of modest surpluses and a GDP growth rate of 3.3%. The province continues to reject a provincial sales tax, however will implement new levies including an electric vehicle tax and increased taxes on tobacco and vaping products. Additionally, the budget addresses labour shortages through expanded training programs and incentives, aiming to reduce job vacancies, and bolster the workforce in critical sectors.
