Modern Day Slavery Bill, S-216, passes second reading, referred to Committee

April 1, 2021

A Senate Bill, S-216 (An Act to enact the Modern Slavery Act and to amend the Customs Tariff), passed second reading Tuesday evening and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.

The Bill, if passed, aims to combat modern slavery by imposing supply chain reporting requirements on businesses that meet certain criteria and that produce, sell or import goods in Canada. RCC is preparing comments with suggested amendments to ensure reporting requirements are reasonable and to avoid any potential unintended or harmful effects on retailers.
