Permanent Changes to Student Work Hours Set for September

April 30, 2024

Attention retailers who employ international students: The government plans to end the temporary 40-hour-per-week allowance for eligible international students, initially implemented to address pandemic-induced labour shortages. Following RCC and industry group advocacy, a permanent increase from the former 20-hour limit to 24 hours has been secured, effective September. This new limit allows for 3 full shifts per week. During summer or winter breaks, students can work full-time or more, while those not on break, as of April 30, will be capped at 20 hours until September. RCC continues to  emphasize the policy’s role in managing staffing shortages and offering flexibility, noting its popularity among international students.
