Proposed changes to regulation of pest control products in Canada

August 22, 2023

The federal government has extended the comment period for Notice of Intent NOI2023-01, Strengthening the regulation of pest control products in Canada until September 8. Proposed amendments of potential impact to retailers include:

  1. Requiring the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) to issue a public notification for section 10 maximum residual limits (MRL) applications once an application for imported food products has been accepted for review;
  2. Requiring registrants and applicants to submit available information on cumulative environmental effects, so this information could be considered within the PMRA’s environmental risk assessments;
  3. Adding an explicit authority to the Pest Control Products Regulations for the Minister to require registrants and applicants to submit available information on species at risk.
