Publication of Federal Offset Protocol for Refrigeration Systems
February 28, 2023On February 24, 2023, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) published the Federal Offset Protocol for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Refrigeration Systems (Version 1.0).
Given the prevalence of industrial and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems across retail operations, this protocol will be of interest as it provides an incentive to replace traditional refrigerants with ones that are less harmful to the climate. Of particular concern is the release of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) from these systems which can happen during equipment installation, when charging or topping up equipment with refrigerant, and from routine operation and maintenance.
ECCC will be hosting public webinars on Thursday, March 16, 2023 to provide a high-level overview of the protocol (registration required):
• English session (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM EST): Webex-English
• French session (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST): Webex-Francais
RCC will be attending a webinar and facilitating further discussion with members through RCC’s ESG & Climate Action Committee.
