Changes to Alberta Labour Relations Code and Employment Standards

July 10, 2020

Alberta has introduced legislation intended to Restore Balance in Alberta’s Workplaces through a number of improvements to the province’s Labour Relations Code and Employment Standards Act. RCC was actively involved earlier this year as part of the consultation process, and is pleased to see a number of our recommendations have been incorporated. The legislation once passed will create simpler and more flexible rules for general holiday pay, group terminations, payment of final earnings upon termination, temporary layoff notices and payroll process. It also makes it easier for employers to apply for variances and exemptions, and better utilizes the Labour Relations Board. Bill 32 also updates Union rules related to offsite picketing, political campaigning and disciplinary powers.
