BC employers with COVID-19 Emergency Layoff Variances reminded to renew in advance of expiration of variances

The BC government previously announced an amendment to the Employment Standards Regulation to allow workers and employers to agree to an extended “COVID-19 emergency layoff” of up to 24 weeks in any consecutive 28-week period.
In light of the fact that some sectors are still in recovery mode, workers and employers who wish to extend a current “COVID-19 emergency layoff” are reminded to check their renewal date and ensure they take action well before the variance expires to avoid the potential of permanent staff layoffs. Many variances extended in August 2020 are set to expire at the end of December 2020. The application form and more information are available here.
