Amendment to Employment Standards “Right to Refuse” Rules in Manitoba
January 5, 2022Following strong advocacy by RCC, in December 2020, government restraints on when stores could open were fully removed, with the exception of Remembrance Day. As an accompanying piece of RCC advocacy, Manitoba’s Employment Standards rules have been updated.
The amendments allow employees the right to refuse work on a Sunday except when a worker agrees in writing at the time of being hired to work on Sundays. It stimulates this requirement in a collective agreement, or if they work in a retail business where the number of workers does not ordinarily exceed four persons at any one time.
