StatCan: Payroll employment numbers released for August 2022
November 1, 2022Statistics Canada released its most recent payroll employment report for August 2022 and showed a national -0.1% drop – a loss of 22,200 positions – month-over-month.
The number of employees receiving pay or benefits from their employer – referred to as “payroll employees” in the federal government Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours – saw its biggest decreases in Quebec (-28,100; -0.7%) and Ontario (-13,800; -0.2%), offset by gains in British Columbia (+8,100; +0.3%) and Manitoba (+2,800; +0.4%).
Payroll employment in retail trade decreased by 8,200 (-0.4%) in August, following a slight increase of 1,300 (+0.1%) in July.
