Saanich likely to pass single-use checkout bag bylaw with August 20, 2021 effective date

June 17, 2021

The District of Saanich has informed RCC that its council will be considering adoption of their single-use checkout bag bylaw at their June 21, 2021 meeting. If passed, which RCC deems highly likely, the bylaw will come into effect August 20, 2021.

The bylaw is similar to that of neighbouring Victoria. It allows for a lower minimum fee of 15 cents for paper checkout bags and $1 for reusable bags for the first year of the bylaw, rising to 25 cents and $2 respectively one year after taking effect.
