Federal government: 20-hour-per-week limit on work for international students lifted until April 30, 2024

December 13, 2023

Following advocacy efforts by RCC and other trade associations, the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced last week that international students already in Canada, as well as those applicants who have already submitted an application for a study permit by December 7, 2023, will be able to work off campus until April 30, 2024 over the previous 20-hour-per-week limit.

The measure was set to expire on December 31, 2023. RCC is appreciative of the Government’s recognition that international students make up an important part of the part-time workforce and looks forward to discussions on the future of this policy, including the possibility of a permanent expansion of off-campus work hours for international students to 30 hours when class is in session. RCC will continue to be in discussion with Government on this file.
