PayPal Canada: Canadians have increased monthly online shopping spend by over $2b

June 24, 2021

This week, PayPal Canada released its Trends & Spends: 2021 Consumer Shopping Study, which found that Canadians have increased their online shopping spend by over $2 billion compared to pre-pandemic months. The average online spend per month now sits at $5.5 billion.

Per person, Canadians are spending $178 per month shopping online on average, which is more than twice the $69 they spent before March 2020. Nearly half (49%) of Canadians are now shopping for groceries online, and significant portions of the population are buying online in other categories as well. This includes home office furniture and equipment (56%), fitness equipment, apps and programs (41%), and school supplies (38%).

Customers named shipping costs (53% of respondents) and delivery times (51%) as their top deterrents to online purchases.
