Canada opens permanent residency and work permits to certain retail staff to help fill labour shortages

July 23, 2021

On May 6, 2021, the Government of Canada opened a limited-time pathway to permanent residency for certain temporary foreign workers in essential non-healthcare occupations currently working in Canada and their families. This applies to professions including but not limited to cashiers, janitors, store shelf stockers, and retail salespersons. Additionally, as of July 26, 2021, those who submitted an application under this program are also eligible to apply for an open work permit expiring December 31, 2022 while awaiting the results of their application for PR.
