Provincial StatCan data on the impact of COVID-19

StatCan just released new data on the economic impact of COVID-19 in each province and territory. It’s a rich new stream of information on regional retail sales from pre-pandemic to March 2021 as well as other regional economic data on jobs, youth jobs and GDP.

Lower economic activity during COVID-19 highlighted underlying differences in regional economies, with notable takeaways being:

  • Ontario has been slow to recover due to extended lockdowns
  • BC has posted the strongest employment recovery
  • Alberta remains hardest hit by COVID-19
