StatCan just released new data on the economic impact of COVID-19 in each province and territory. It’s a rich new stream of information on regional retail sales from pre-pandemic to March 2021 as well as other regional economic data on jobs, youth jobs and GDP.
Lower economic activity during COVID-19 highlighted underlying differences in regional economies, with notable takeaways being:
- Ontario has been slow to recover due to extended lockdowns
- BC has posted the strongest employment recovery
- Alberta remains hardest hit by COVID-19
