Quebec’s public health agency, Institut national de la santé publique (INSPQ), released a guide on prevention measures for businesses (in French only) to help retail employees who cannot maintain physical distance of two metres from each other.
Highlighted guidance for retailers:
For tasks where it is impossible to maintain a minimum distance of two metres for more than 15 minutes accumulated in the same shift, adaptations must be made:
- Install an adequate physical barrier to separate the worker from other workers and customers when the distance of two metres cannot be respected: Aee the Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité (IRSST) sheet for details on physical barriers.
- If it is impossible or awaiting the implementation of distancing measures or a physical barrier :
- The wearing of a medical procedure mask (surgical mask) and eye protection (glasses with side protection or visor) are recommended.
The Commission des normes, des l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) guidance for retail and shopping centres has therefore also been updated in this regard, and is available in English:
A procedure mask and protective eyewear (protective glasses or visor covering the face down to the chin) are supplied per employee to personnel who perform a task requiring them to be within 2 metres of another person and in the absence of physical barriers.
